Thank you, Volunteers!

A number of celebratory events and activities are planned to take place during National Volunteers' Week (1-7 June) to thank and honour Somerset's thousands of unsung heroes.

To honour Somerset's volunteers, the volunteering organisation Engage invited the public to submit 'Shining Star' nominations earlier this year. Award ceremonies will now take place in Taunton, 6 June, and Minehead, 8 June, where overall area volunteer winners for Taunton Deane and West Somerset will be announced.

Location: Kennard Moor drove, Glastonbury

One fire engine from Glastonbury along with the animal rescue team from Bridgwater were mobilised to reports of a sheep stuck in a water filled rhyne on Kennard Moor Drove.
On arrival crews confirmed the sheep was stuck and got to work using level 1 water rescue equipment and manual handling to get the sheep out. Crews gave the sheep oxygen therapy and a while later released the sheep back into the field.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received a call reporting a fire at the above location.

Whilst proceeding to the incident, the first appliance confirmed a large fire which they believed to be a workshop and immediately made pumps 4. This additional appliance was sent from Wells along with a specialist support officer.

The Fire Service attended a Vehicle Fire in the above area. One Fire Appliance from Street was mobilised to this incident.
On arrival, crews confirmed a fire had occurred but was out on arrival of the Fire Service. Crews made the Vehicle safe checking it with a Thermal Imaging Camera. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.

Location: Pomparles Bridge, Glastonbury

The Fire Service attended a Water Rescue in the above area. Fire Appliances from Glastonbury, Street and the Specialist Rescue Team from Bridgwater were mobilised to this incident.
On arrival, crews confirmed 1 Female still within the River. Crews rescued the female using Water Rescue Equipment and Ladders and is now in the hands of the Ambulance Service.

Somerset County Council is asking everyone to help make a difference to the lives of people living with dementia.

Dementia Action Week, led by the Alzheimer's Society, is taking place next week [21-27 May] and Somerset County Council is calling on everyone to come together and help create a 'dementia-friendly' County. There are lots of activities and events around the County that will help families affected by the disease.

One fire appliance from Castle Cary was sent to a report of a road traffic collision at the above location.
The incident involved a curtain sided truck that was in collision with a bridge.  The vehicle was removed from under the bridge and made safe.  The Police also attended.

We are urging people living in Wellington to be alert after reports of thefts of cash from homes and vehicles in the town.

"We're concerned to see this number of offences in such a usually safe area and appreciate the understandable anxiety it's causing the community.

 Neighbourhood officers are increasing patrols in the area, calling on support from colleagues in Tri-Force, and we'd encourage anyone who sees someone trying door handles or acting suspiciously around homes or vehicles to call us immediately.
