Glastonbury Town Council has moved to shut down claims it is backing a so-called "homeless hub" in the town – insisting no such agreement exists.
Councillors had received a letter suggesting the authority was supporting plans for a specific site. Members branded the claim "completely untrue" and asked officers to make the council's position crystal clear.
Cllr Terry Napper said: "We need immediately to distance ourselves from this because there is so much untruth in this. It says that the Glastonbury Council is supporting us — that is totally untrue."
Cllr Jon Cousins added: "Whilst I'm aware that such a place should be available for vulnerable people and the homeless, this certainly isn't the answer, and I think the sooner it's resolved the better.
"I remember in the days of the Robert Barton Trust in Silver Street — homeless people had a place where they could wash their clothes, have a shower, have a cuppa. It provided a really good service and it was well used."
Councillors agreed the town still needs better support for people sleeping rough or in crisis and said the current situation highlights how stretched local services have become. Several members urged a joined-up approach, bringing together charities, faith groups and health partners to provide proper, long-term support.
Officers were asked to draw up options for a coordinated response – potentially linked to the health and wellbeing services planned at St Dunstan's House – as councillors warned that ignoring the issue would only make matters worse.
