Street roundabout fuel station plan returns
By Laura Linham 29th Apr 2026
A new bid to build a fuel station and EV charging hub at one of Street's busiest gateways has been submitted to Somerset Council.
Developers want to build the scheme at the former Sweet Acre Nursery site on Street Roundabout, just off the A39.
The proposal includes eight fuel pumps, four EV charging bays, jet wash and vacuum facilities, and a retail building.
Plans also show 12 parking spaces and a new access point created from the roundabout, replacing what the application describes as a "heavily used" but informal entrance.
The site has been the subject of several failed applications in recent years.
A proposal for a Marks & Spencer Food store was dropped in 2017, while a 2019 plan for a filling station was withdrawn following ecological concerns.
A revised scheme in 2021 was refused by Somerset Council.
Planning officers raised issues including the site being outside Street's development boundary, the impact on nearby trees and watercourses, and concerns over phosphate levels.
The latest application says those concerns have been addressed and points to a similar development approved near Shepton Mallet.
The planning statement also argues the village is underserved when it comes to fuel.
It says Street currently has just one filling station, at Sainsbury's, leaving "no choice or competition" and no alternative when it is closed.
The application can be viewed and commented on via Somerset Council's planning portal using reference 2026/0639/FUL.
