Homes and small businesses in Glastonbury and Street are due to receive electricity safety visits as part of a National Grid inspection programme.

National Grid Electricity Distribution is sending approved contractors to properties in the BA6 postcode area to check service termination points, also known as cut-outs.

These are the points where the main incoming electricity cable and fuse are located, usually close to the electricity meter.

For many homes built since the 1980s, the cut-out is in an outside meter cabinet, although some are inside properties.

Inspectors will visually check the equipment, take notes and record basic details.

They will not take equipment apart and power supplies will not be interrupted.

The checks are part of a wider rolling programme across the South West, Midlands and South Wales.

NGED said it has an Ofgem licence obligation to inspect assets and make sure cut-outs at low-voltage metered properties are operating safely.

Richard Brady, NGED's policy engineer leading the programme, said: "Inspectors will visually examine cut-outs to check they are working as they should, taking photos and notes for our records.

"In the unlikely event of a defective cut-out being found, NGED engineers will be sent to carry out repairs at no cost to the customer."

The visits will also help NGED record low-carbon technology connected to local homes and businesses, such as electric vehicle chargers and solar panels.

Inspectors will be from A Coole and should be clearly identifiable as working for NGED.

They will be able to show ID and authorisation before entering properties.

Customers can also take their own photographs of their cut-out and meter and send them to NGED, which will decide whether a follow-up visit is needed.
