A new walking and cycling route has opened in Street, giving residents a safer link towards Clarks Village.

The shared-use path runs between the Farm Road underpass and the Street roundabout, where the A39 meets the B3151 Somerton Road.

It was delivered as part of Somerset Council's four-month roadworks scheme on the A39 Westway, which began in early January.

The work included replacing traffic lights at key junctions through Street, resurfacing and improvements for active travel.

The new route is expected to benefit future residents of 33 affordable homes planned for land at the corner of Portland Road and Cemetery Lane.

Aster Housing is behind the scheme, which was approved by Somerset Council's planning committee east in June 2025.

Legal agreements between the council and Aster were signed off in late March.

The Portland Road site was allocated for at least 32 homes in the Mendip Local Plan Part II.

The same committee has also approved outline plans for a further 65 homes on Moorland Road, including 20 affordable homes.

Councillor Liz Leyshon, who represents Street, said in early April that she was "really hopeful we'll have spades in the ground very soon" at the Aster site.

She said: "Every time I walk down the high street, I am asked, particularly by young people, when there will be housing in Street that they can actually afford, either to rent or to buy."

Future residents on Portland Road and Moorland Road will be able to use existing footpaths through Woods Batch and along Grange Road to reach the A39 Westway.

From there, the Farm Road underpass connects to the new path near Barn Close, leading towards the main entrance of Clarks Village.

The route also links to crossings over Somerton Road and the existing footpath along the A39 The Causeway towards the River Brue and Glastonbury.

Cllr Leyshon said she now wants further improvements between the Street roundabout and Pomparles Bridge.

Posting on Saturday, 9 May, she said: "Thanks to everyone who takes time to message and to chat on my daily walks — it's really good to see so many people using the new path.

"I'm spending a lot of time now on how we can improve the next bit of the path between the big roundabout and Pomparles Bridge — it's a really busy path and nowhere near wide enough."
