Glastonbury survey pushes bid for direct Castle Cary bus link
By Laura Linham 29th Jan 2026
Glastonbury travellers are being asked to take part in a survey about a proposed new bus service linking the town with Castle Cary railway station — a move campaigners say could cut journey times to London to around two‑and‑a‑half hours if funding is secured.
The Glastonbury TrainLink group is leading the bid for approximately £150,000 in Local Authority Bus Grant money to trial the route for at least six months, with timetables that sync with train departures and arrivals. The nearest station is less than nine miles away "as the crow flies", but campaigners say lack of a direct public service has long hampered rail use.
"There are no direct buses, taxis cost £30 to £45 one‑way, even if you have a car there's no guarantee of a space in the station car park," a spokesperson said, urging locals to complete the online survey to show demand for the route.
Organisers believe a successful bid — submitted through the Somerset Bus Partnership — could help open up faster public transport links from Glastonbury to London and other national destinations via Castle Cary.
