Glastonbury police have set out a tough new strategy to tackle persistent anti-social behaviour in the town centre as spring approaches and footfall increases.

The plan, agreed on Friday, 12 January, includes visible foot patrols, early intervention, and joint operations with partner agencies in key trouble spots such as the High Street, Market Place, St Dunstan's Car Park and the Abbey gateway.

Officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team will work alongside Haven staff to increase patrols at peak times — particularly after school, during early evenings, and on weekends. Police say this visible presence will help deter alcohol-fuelled and youth-related incidents before they escalate.

Weekly intelligence reviews involving local businesses, CCTV operators and council contacts will identify emerging hotspots. The force will also partner with YMCA and outreach services to support individuals struggling with addiction, homelessness or exploitation risks.

A police spokesperson said: "We do need people to keep reporting incidents to us. We will of course deal with criminal offences robustly. However, with ASB we have to follow a set of steps from warnings, through notices to court orders."

A pre-spring review will confirm staffing levels and patrol routes for busier months ahead. Officers have confirmed that Community Protection Warnings and Notices, and dispersal powers, will be used where necessary.

Police say the aim is to keep Glastonbury's town centre safe and welcoming for residents, traders and tourists.
