Dozens of roads across Somerset remain closed following severe flooding caused by Storm Chandra, with council leaders warning more properties could be affected later this week.

Somerset Council declared a major incident on Tuesday, 23 January, after the county recorded its wettest week since 2014. The declaration enables emergency services and partner agencies to coordinate resources and response efforts.

The Environment Agency has 16 flood warnings in place, and the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for further rain from 12 noon on Thursday until midnight.

Current road closures across Somerset include:

• A303 closed from Stoke Sub Hamdon (A3088) to Ilchester

• A361 shut between East Lyng and Burrowbridge

• Cutts Road (East Lyng to Athelney)

• Langport Road (Muchelney to Langport)

• New Road (West Lyng to North Curry)

• Stoke Road, Martock

• Henlade/Ruishton to Creech St Michael

• Sampford Moor Road (landslip)

• B3153 at Clanville

• A38 Wellington Road at West Buckland

• Godminster Lane, Bruton (fallen tree)

• A38 between Monkton Elm and Walford Cross

• A359 from Mudford to Marston Magna

Bus services are also facing disruption across the county, with operators advising passengers to check before travelling.

Council leader Bill Revans said: "We are also looking into ensuring further properties don't flood although we do expect that number to rise beyond the 50 currently. We are of course very worried — that's why we have declared this major incident."

Council staff will be stationed at Moorland Village Hall on Wednesday, 10 am to 4 pm, to support residents, and those affected are urged to contact Somerset Council for help.
