Contractor hails ‘privilege’ of bringing Glastonbury’s Baily’s Buildings back to life

With work already underway at Glastonbury's historic Baily's Buildings, the contractor behind the project has revealed how the once-derelict glove factory will be brought back to life as a space for business, learning and community.
Regional contractor Beard is leading the £6.3 million first phase of the restoration, funded by the government's Town Deal. The firm says the first job is stabilising the structure and protecting the fabric of the building before full internal transformation begins.
"These buildings are such an important part of Glastonbury's history," said Beard regional director Matt Cooper. "It's a privilege for us to be part of their transformation. Our initial focus is on ensuring the structures are safe and sound, laying a strong foundation for what will become a major asset to the community."
Once secured, the site will be fitted out as a zero-carbon hub for start-ups, creative businesses, education providers and the new Glastonbury Environment Centre. A small visitor centre will also open to celebrate the building's industrial past — including its role in manufacturing boxing gloves worn by Muhammad Ali.
Beard's work will also include access improvements, wildlife-friendly landscaping and long-term sustainability measures.
The project is being delivered on behalf of the Beckery Island Regeneration Trust, with Dowlas Property Group managing the scheme. Completion is expected in 2026.
