A new Code of Practice for street performers in Glastonbury has been introduced following concerns over noise and disruption in the town centre.
The Glastonbury Town Centre Crime Reduction Committee, alongside local street performers, police, and the Environment Protection Team, have worked together to create the updated guidelines aimed at balancing the lively street performance scene with the needs of residents and businesses.
While street performances are a popular attraction in Glastonbury, the Local Authority and police have received multiple complaints about excessive noise, particularly from drums and amplifiers, and the length of time performers occupy the same area.
The new code covers all forms of street performances, including theatre and poetry, and introduces several key rules. Performers are now asked to avoid the use of amplifiers and drums, limit their performances to one hour at a time, and move at least 50 metres away if they wish to continue performing. They should also not return to the same spot on the same day.
The code also includes restrictions on obstructing public areas, discourages performing outside places of worship during services, and asks performers to be mindful of others by reducing noise levels if requested by shopkeepers or residents.
Somerset Council officers will issue verbal or written warnings to those who do not follow the new guidelines. Persistent breaches could lead to fines, equipment seizure, or legal action under the Antisocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 or the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
Printed copies of the new Code of Practice are available from the Glastonbury Town Council Reception at the Glastonbury Information Centre in the Town Hall.
