Town falls silent as Glastonbury pays its respects

By Laura Linham   9th Nov 2025

Glastonbury came to a halt today as hundreds lined the streets for a deeply moving Remembrance parade that saw veterans, families and young cadets side by side in honour of the fallen.

The parade made its way through the town in solemn procession before gathering at the War Memorial, where standards were lowered in a moment that brought an instant hush across the High Street. Even the wind seemed to drop as the Last Post rang out, echoing between the shops and rooftops.

For two minutes, the town stood absolutely frozen. Parents held their children close. Veterans bowed their heads. Eyes were dabbed, and even the youngest members of the town stood silent and still.

You could hear breaths catch as a lone piper brought the silence to an emotional close.

Wreaths were laid by St John's Infants School, St Benedict's Junior School, St Dunstan's School, Millfield School, members of the emergency services, cadets, dignitaries, local groups, St John Ambulance, and members of motorbike clubs who joined the procession, each placing their tribute with quiet pride.

Others stood quietly beside the memorial, holding aloft white paper doves that twisted in the breeze.

There were tears, long embraces, and a sense of unity that stretched far beyond the memorial stones. In a world that can feel constantly divided, Glastonbury stood together today — to remember those who never came home and to honour those still serving.

A powerful turnout, a powerful silence, and a community that showed its heart.

  • Street's Remembrance Parade will begin at 2:30 pm on Sunday, 9 November from the Royal British Legion on Farm Road. The parade will move through the High Street and stop at the United Reformed Church for a wreath-laying, then continue along Vestry Road to Merriman Park for a full service and second wreath-laying.
  • The separate timings allow residents, veterans, and families to attend both commemorations. Both towns are encouraging strong public turnout in tribute to all those who have served.
