Things to do in Somerset this February half term: top family activities across Wells, Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury and Street

Looking for things to do with the kids in Somerset this February half term? Whether you're based in Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury, Street or Wells, there's a full week of family-friendly events, crafts, trails and low-cost days out waiting for you — including plenty of free half term activities.

Saturday 14 February – Half term kicks off with fossils, snowdrops and stargazing
Half term in Mendip begins with a prehistoric bang as the Fantastic Fossils programme at Shoemakers Museum in Street launches for the school holidays. Families can enjoy interactive fossil trails, arts and crafts, storytelling, and real ichthyosaur skeletons. Running daily until 22 February.
In Wells, families can explore the Bishop's Palace gardens with a self-led snowdrop trail, alongside interactive palace tours and midweek crafting sessions.
Meanwhile, the Somerset Star Count 2026 gets under way across the county – a free, family-friendly activity where you help map light pollution by counting stars in Orion. No telescope required.
In Shepton Mallet, Shepton Mallet Prison opens its doors with a Kids Go Free offer running from 14–22 February. It's a fascinating, self-guided tour through the oldest working prison in the UK – with plenty to entertain curious minds.
Over in Glastonbury, the Somerset Rural Life Museum begins its half term activity week, including biscuit decorating and a themed tractor trail – all included with Museum Unlimited or general admission.

Sunday 15 February – Dino crafts and animal-themed fun
At Shoemakers Museum in Street, families can book onto Making with Me: Dino Edition, a relaxed Sunday craft session for grown-ups and children to get creative together.
The Rural Life Museum continues with family trails and themed crafts — ideal if you're looking for family days out in Glastonbury this half term.
Monday 16 February – Storytime and sensory-friendly sessions
At the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton, the Luna the Globetrotter trail launches today. A perfect indoor half term day out, this interactive activity includes a daily 11:30am story session with author Ben Pulletz and a technology-themed scavenger hunt through the museum.
The Rural Life Museum offers sensory sessions for families who prefer a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere.
Tuesday 17 February – Free playdays and medieval soap carving
Wells Cathedral launches its half term creative workshops with Masons' Marks, where kids can carve soap bars inspired by historic stonemason signatures.
Over in Wincanton, the Winter Half Term Playday brings a day of FREE family fun, including crafts, music-making and face painting.
At Somerset Rural Life Museum, it's pancake day – with races, decorating and flipping challenges in the barn.
Wednesday 18 February – High-tech fun and embroidery crafts
In Wells, Wells Cathedral continues with Stories in Stitches, a hands-on textile workshop designed for children to explore stories through sewing and collage.
Tech-loving families should head to the Fleet Air Arm Museum for the one-day All Aboard Future Tech event. Kids aged 6+ can code, use robotics, crack secret messages and take home a 3D-printed souvenir.
At the Rural Life Museum, visitors can meet birds of prey up close as part of the day's wildlife theme.

Thursday 19 February – Snowdrops, stained glass and snakes
Today in Wells, The Bishop's Palace hosts its Art Adventurer snowdrop-themed card-making workshop, while Wells Cathedral offers Wondrous Windows – a family activity focused on stained glass and storytelling.
Looking for something a bit wilder? The Rural Life Museum welcomes creepy crawlies and snakes, giving brave children the chance to get hands-on with some scaly guests.
Friday 20 February – Fossil ID and tractor day
In Street, Shoemakers Museum runs a fossil identification session at 11am – bring in your mystery finds and let experts help you figure out what's what.
Meanwhile, the Rural Life Museum celebrates all things farming with Tractor Day, giving kids the chance to sit in a cab, explore machinery and talk to real local farmers.
Saturday 21 February – Archaeology and storytelling
Shoemakers Museum closes its half term programme with Ichthyosaur storytelling sessions at 11am and 1pm, alongside archaeological finds identification with the South West Heritage Trust team. A brilliant day for young palaeontologists and history buffs alike.
Rural Life Museum continues with creative activities and family trails inspired by the natural world.
Sunday 22 February – Final day of February half term fun
From star counts and sea dragons to stained glass and soft play, this is your last chance to make the most of the February half term holiday across Mendip. Whether you're heading to Glastonbury, Wells, Shepton Mallet or Street, there's still time to pack in one more adventure.
