Tesco bookworms raise £250 for Glastonbury and Street Lions with second-hand shelf donations

By Laura Linham 9th Jul 2025

Tesco customers in Glastonbury have proved that second-hand stories can still do a world of good – raising £250 for the Glastonbury and Street Lions Club just by picking up a paperback. The donation comes from the store’s in-store second-hand book shelves, which allow customers to grab a read in exchange for a small donation. June’s takings have now been handed over to the Lions and will go straight into the club’s charity account to support a wide range of good causes. Lions members dropped by the store to collect the donation and meet Tesco’s Community Champion, Kristie Mynott, who presented the cheque to incoming club president Peter Cole. A spokesperson for the Lions said: “We’re most grateful to Tesco for the donation. This is a great example of recycling books and giving a benefit to those less fortunate than ourselves.” The funds will go toward the club’s ongoing support for local, national and international projects, continuing a long tradition of fundraising and community service across Glastonbury, Street and the surrounding villages. The Lions Club recently marked the start of its new year, with Peter Cole taking over the chain of office – and preparing to lead the club into its 50th anniversary celebrations in 2026. In the meantime, it’s clear that every donated book – no matter how dog-eared – still has a chapter to write. (Supplied)
