Pens out for planet Earth: Local children urged to write for a greener future

Young writers in Street, Glastonbury, Wells and Shepton Mallet are being urged to put pen to paper this summer in a new story-writing competition focused on saving the planet, one peel at a time.
Somerset Council and SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, in collaboration with local author Ben Pulletz, have launched Luna and Friends' Great Food Waste Recycling Journey – a competition encouraging children aged 7 to 16 to write stories themed around food waste recycling.
"This unique competition not only encourages creativity but also raises awareness about the importance of recycling food waste," said Councillor Richard Wilkins, Executive Member for Transport and Waste Services at Somerset Council. "It's a great opportunity for young minds to contribute to a greener future while showcasing their storytelling talents."
Children are invited to submit stories of up to 500 words, with prizes including book vouchers and copies of Pulletz's book Luna Explores Somerset. Entries must be submitted by 7 September 2025 via email to [email protected] or handed in at any Somerset library.
"We are looking forward to receiving creative entries from the children of Somerset," said Lily Morton, Senior Community Liaison Manager at SUEZ. "Recycling is the best thing you can do with any unavoidable food waste and we want to encourage more residents to use their food waste recycling service."
In Somerset, 7 out of 10 households recycle their food waste, yet around 21% of an average household's general rubbish is still food waste by weight – a missed opportunity for creating green electricity and fertiliser.
Author Ben Pulletz added: "This is a great story activity for children to explore their creativity this summer. Hopefully it will get them engaged in recycling and encourage them to learn about this green action to protect the planet for the future."
To enter, children must include their name, age, a parent or guardian's contact details, and their location. Full information and terms are available at www.somerset.gov.uk/FoodCampaign.
