A young pianist from Street has been crowned winner of a prestigious classical music contest celebrating rising talent from across the region.

Hannah Yap, a Year 10 student at Millfield School, won the Rotary (Greater Bristol) Young Musician Competition after impressing judges with three piano pieces in the final. The win secures her place in the regional and national stages of the Rotary's national youth music contest, which is open to instrumentalists and vocalists aged 13 to 17 performing at Grade 7 or above.

Hannah began learning the piano aged four and now practises for around two hours a day, alongside violin and vocal training. "Winning the Young Musician Competition meant a great deal to me," she said. "It gave me confidence and motivation to continue developing as a performer."

She credits Millfield's music department for helping her balance her academic work with performance practice. "The supportive environment and opportunities to perform have really allowed me to grow," she said.

Kirsty Barry, Director of Music at Millfield, said: "This is just one in an amazing array of successes, demonstrating Hannah's love of music making, and hard work through practice and commitment."

Hannah now hopes to take on more major competitions and international performance opportunities as she continues developing as a soloist.
