Significant progress is being made on key projects funded by the Glastonbury town deal, with updates from both St Dunstan's House and Tor Leisure Centre showcasing the developments set to benefit the local community.
At St Dunstan's House, the ongoing restoration and new atrium addition at Glastonbury Town Hall are well underway.
In recent weeks, contractors Melhuish and Saunders have made progress with the rear extension foundations, demolished the previous lean-to structure alongside the Main Hall, and installed temporary balcony supports ahead of its replacement. Internal alterations continue, with old render stripped back to reveal the historic rubble-built wall facing the Town Hall. The site now features interpretation boards on the Magdalene Street hoardings, offering a glimpse into the project's progress and future plans.
The refurbishment will transform St Dunstan's House into a new community hub in the town centre, offering facilities for health and wellbeing services, meetings, gatherings, and events. The addition of a Changing Places Toilet will also ensure the facility is fully accessible, meeting the needs of all visitors.
Meanwhile, over at Tor Leisure Centre, excitement is building as preparations are made for its significant refurbishment. Although the original plans for a new extension had to be scaled back due to rising construction costs, the revamped centre will still offer a wide range of updated facilities, including a multi-use hall, gym, changing rooms, treatment rooms, and a social area complete with a bar and café.
The leisure centre is set to become a 'centre of excellence', providing space for sports, training, education, and health support, while serving as a meeting place for the local community. The facility will be operated by Fusion Leisure and available to local sports clubs, including cricket, football, bowls, and acrobatics.
These projects are part of the £23.6m secured through the government's town deal, with 11 projects in total aimed at enhancing Glastonbury's town centre and improving its facilities.
This funding is strictly allocated for the town deal, meaning it must be fully spent by March 2026 or returned to central government.
