Glastonbury's new mayor says he's on a mission to fight disinformation and give young people a boost during his year in office.

Cllr Michael White was elected mayor at the Town Council's annual meeting earlier this month — but now the dust has settled, he's making clear where his priorities lie.

Top of the list? Tackling false information and keeping locals in the loop. "It is a struggle at times," he admitted, urging councillors to help challenge disinformation "wherever we find it". A new council-run quarterly newsletter is already in the works to help residents stay informed.

But Cllr White is also putting young people at the heart of his mayoral year. He's throwing his support behind Promise Works, a Somerset-based charity that provides one-to-one mentoring for vulnerable children. He's promised to raise the profile of the charity and help bring in support across the community.

Speaking after his election, Cllr White paid tribute to outgoing mayor Councillor Lokabee Lokabandhu, council staff, and mace bearers Terry and Rosie — with Terry staying on for another year and Rosie stepping down. Shaheen Sahara Falcon has been named lady mayoress, and Danu Forest will serve as mayoral chaplain.

Cllr Zoe Price was also elected deputy mayor, following in the footsteps of her mum, who previously held the top job. She said she'd "do the very best job that I can".

The mayoral year runs until May 2026 — and with promises made, all eyes are now on what comes next.
