MP slams £2.50-a-day school meal vouchers as Bank Holiday gap leaves kids short

Children on free school meals in Somerset are being "left hungry" over Bank Holidays because supermarket vouchers don't cover them, an MP has warned.
Glastonbury and Somerton's Sarah Dyke has written to the Minister for School Standards demanding an urgent review of the scheme — which gives families just £2.50 a day during school holidays.
With food prices rising 4% in July, outstripping inflation, Dyke says the support is now "increasingly inadequate" — and with the August Bank Holiday looming, children will be left without help for an extra day.
"In Somerset there are 12,054 children eligible for Free School Meals, a number that has increased by 10% from the start of the academic year," Dyke said. "These children are entitled to proper support, not just during school hours, but all year round."
Food banks are already under strain. Langport Cares Food Bank has reported a surge in families seeking support this summer, with resources "stretched beyond capacity."
Dyke wants the government to up the value of the vouchers and make sure they're handed out for all weekdays — Bank Holidays included.
She added: "When children go hungry, they fall behind in school, their health suffers and their futures are put at risk. This government must not only aim to expand Free School Meals provision but take immediate action so that existing provision is adequate. No child's development, wellbeing or dignity should be compromised by inadequate food support."
