Fresh rules aimed at tackling antisocial behaviour in Glastonbury could be published by mid‑February, town councillors were told at a recent meeting.
The measures, forming part of a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO), would allow restrictions in public areas on issues including aggressive behaviour, street drinking and harassment.
Members heard a newly appointed Somerset Council officer has taken over drafting the town's PSPO and has already visited Glastonbury to see problem areas. County councillor Ewan Cameron told the meeting the officer said he had previously cut antisocial behaviour "by 90 to 95 per cent" in another area using similar approaches.
Councillors were advised written proposals for Glastonbury are expected by mid‑February, with the possibility of an update meeting involving Somerset Council and the local MP once details are available.
Residents have expressed growing frustration at the slow pace of progress.
Initial discussions around introducing a PSPO in Glastonbury began last year, but councillors acknowledged it has taken time to move from discussion to draft proposals.
Councillor Cameron said people regularly ask for updates, but clear answers have been difficult to give while the PSPO measures are still being drafted. Once published, any PSPO proposals would normally be subject to public consultation before formal restrictions can be agreed.
Councillors hope the next update will give residents a clearer idea of what measures are being considered and when decisions are likely to be made.
