The site of a long-running children's nursery in Street could soon be converted into two homes, after plans were submitted to Somerset Council.
Eager Beavers Nursery, which served families in the town for over 40 years, closed in July after its landlord, St John Ambulance, put the building up for sale. Now a developer wants to turn the Park Road property into a pair of residential bungalows.
Planning agents CTA Planning, on behalf of EDZ Homes Ltd, have submitted a prior approval application under permitted development rules to change the site's use from commercial (Class E) to residential (Class C3).
They argue the site meets all the legal tests for conversion — it's not listed, not in a conservation area, not near any major industry, and has been in Class E use for more than two years. It also falls outside flood zones and isn't subject to any special restrictions.
The developer is now asking the council to confirm whether full planning approval is needed — or whether the change can go ahead under permitted development rights.
