Drivers commuting to Wells face A39 diversion for seven weeks

Motorists heading to Wells from Glastonbury are being warned to expect disruption as major roadworks hit the A39 this month.
From Sunday 8 September until Monday 28 October, Glastonbury Road in Wells will go one-way only, with westbound traffic forced onto a lengthy diversion. Anyone leaving Wells on the A39 will have to detour via the A371 through Shepton Mallet and loop back on the A361 to Glastonbury.
The closure hits the stretch between Jocelyn Drive and the Strawberry Way roundabout—right on the town's key commuter route. Somerset Council says the seven-week shutdown is needed for gas, water and electricity upgrades, plus full resurfacing of the road.
Eastbound traffic coming into Wells from Glastonbury will still be able to use the A39 as normal.
Drivers are being urged to plan ahead and allow extra time, especially during the school run and morning rush. The council has warned that disruption is likely and signed diversion routes will be in place throughout.
