Somerset Council has granted planning permission for a new development in Glastonbury as part of the Glastonbury Town Deal.

The approved application (No: 2023/1440/FUL) involves the creation of a year-round visitor destination on land north of Beckery Old Road and Moorland Road.

This project aims to protect, interpret, and make accessible the heritage and natural environment of the 33-acre area known as Brides Mound.

The development includes the construction of a single-storey meeting and activity building, scheduled for completion in Summer 2024.

This building, known as the Round House, will feature basic refreshment facilities, heritage and wildlife information panels, and will be available for community bookings and educational activities.

It will also include improved paths, signage, and a small car park to enhance visitor accessibility.

Local stone will be used to mark out the footprint of Beckery Chapel and Priest's House, allowing visitors to visualise the former monastic buildings. Additionally, the project will involve the installation of an accessible footpath and the excavation of three shallow scrapes as part of a 'wilding' initiative. This will enhance nature-rich habitats and biodiversity, with a wildflower meadow and wellbeing garden being planted for visitors and wildlife to enjoy. Further planting will also take place in the orchard at Chapel Field.

This development is part of the Glastonbury Town Deal, which has secured £23.6 million in investment for the town, funded by the government to deliver the objectives outlined in the Town Investment Plan (TIP). The Town Deal Board developed the TIP through engagement with key partners, businesses, community groups, and Mendip District Council, which is now part of the Somerset Council unitary authority.

The aim of the Town Deal is to provide a necessary 'levelling up' opportunity for Glastonbury, bringing existing assets back into community use and working with local communities to deliver the spaces and resources they want and need.
