As part of the Glastonbury Coronavirus Support Network, there is a group of residents all pulling together and using their sewing skills to support the community.

Tamara Spring, the group's co-ordinator, created a video to show how the masks are made.

She said: "This whole project started when I began designing a mask with Mark Heley using all the relevant material science we could find.

"Then it grew to the wonderful team of volunteers we have now, making scrubs, bags and gowns for our local care homes."

Tamara put a call out for spare material and elastic - the community responded, and volunteer drivers have collecting and delivering the supplies.

The sewing network have been supporting the Glastonbury coronavirus volunteers by providing masks to keep them safe.

Now they are receiving more requests for masks from the local shop owners and others in the community.

Together they have also made scrubs, surgical gowns and scrub bags for St Benedict's Nursing Home, and patient gowns and surgical gowns for Glastonbury Care Home and Cider Barn.

Jan Stone, one of the volunteers, said: "As a retired person I have been really happy to have something positive to contribute towards the community effort in Glastonbury.

"St Benedict's cared for my mum for many years, so it feels good to be able to help them and now other local care homes too.

"I hadn't used my sewing machine for years, but I soon picked the skills up again. The sewing group is brilliantly organised.

"Tamara is quick to answer any queries and the couriers who deliver the materials and collect afterwards are all so friendly."

Berni Doherty is the clinical lead at St Benedict's Nursing Home.

She said: "The community were so selfless and came to the rescue of the frontline staff at St Ben's in order to keep us all safe for which we are forever grateful.

"You've managed to help us remain Covid-19 free and we send heartfelt thanks."

With a national shortage of PPE, the network is incredibly proud of the volunteers' efforts to protect some of Glastonbury's most vulnerable residents.

They are continuing to support the local community and making more masks for the general public.
