Raymond 'Merlin' Rutter, a well-known and much-loved figure in Glastonbury, has died at the age of 77. Recognisable by his blue robes and wizard's hat, he became a familiar sight outside Glastonbury Abbey, offering rune readings to visitors and locals alike.

His death, which was reported on Thursday, February 20, has prompted an outpouring of tributes from the community, with many remembering him as a kind and generous character who embodied the spirit of the town.

Originally from the Midlands, Ray Rutter made Glastonbury his home in later years, where he became affectionately known as 'Merlin'. He was often found in the town centre, speaking with visitors and performing rune readings—an ancient Nordic form of fortune-telling. His presence became part of Glastonbury's character, and those who knew him describe him as a warm and welcoming figure.

Former town crier David Greenway said: "I'm shocked and deeply saddened this evening to read of the passing of our 'Merlin'. He really was very much a part of the furniture of Glastonbury. We always shared jokes and stories whenever we encountered each other in the town. His friendliness, kindness, generosity and warmth were spread so widely and so freely. RIP Ray."

Local blogger Normal for Glastonbury also paid tribute, saying: "Ray was a familiar sight as Glastonbury's street wizard and a hugely popular member of the community. He was a volunteer and fundraiser for the 'Love Glastonbury' Community Fridge and always had a warm smile and a friendly greeting for all."

Before settling in Glastonbury, Ray spent years exploring the spiritual world. Friends recall that he was involved in the Equinox shops in Wolverhampton and Bridgnorth, where he offered readings and advice to those seeking guidance.

He later ran a shop in Bridgnorth called Solstice, which became a well-known spiritual hub. His travels took him further afield, embarking on spiritual journeys to places such as Machu Picchu, where he reportedly found himself stranded after losing his passport. He also spent time travelling across Portugal and Spain in what became known as his "Reiki Bus," helping people through healing and spiritual teachings.

Eventually, he made his way to Glastonbury, where he embraced his role as 'Merlin', becoming one of the town's most recognisable and well-loved figures. Many have taken to social media to express their sadness at his passing.

One friend, who goes by T He Fairiez (sic), wrote: "Town has sadly lost another good man. Ray bought so much joy to the visitors to Glastonbury, as well as being a cornerstone for the locals. The high street will definitely be a duller place without his smile."

His friend Gabriel Avalon described him as "a character, a chap, a nutter, a friend." He added: "He was great, he was amazing, he was a huge character and he was there when you needed him. He was just one of life's nice people."

A resident wrote: "A beautiful, gentle soul. Travel well and arrive safely my friend."

Another said: "Very sad news – always there with a smile and kind word – sending love and light to his friends and family at this time."

Ray Rutter leaves behind a legacy of warmth, wisdom, and a deep connection to the spiritual world. His presence in Glastonbury will be missed, but his influence will undoubtedly be remembered by all those who had the pleasure of meeting him.
