Street lights in Street to be upgraded

Street is to get some new and improved street lights as part of the county's drive to reduce energy costs and reduce its carbon footprint.

Around 20,000 street lights in three places - Street, Minehead and Taunton - are to be upgraded to energy-efficient LED lighting.

The scheme is part of a joint initiative between lighting company Signify and Somerset County Council. The first phase of the installation in 2022 is expected to save the council £160,000 a year and pay for itself within 18 months of installation.

A second phase will see additional districts added to the programme and will further reduce energy expenditure and slash carbon emissions.

Currently, towns and villages across Somerset are lit by a combination of conventional and LED lighting. Somerset has been on its path to carbon neutrality since 2020 and has a target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

But skyrocketing energy prices and the need for safer streets for pedestrian and highway users have raised the urgency of replacing outdated technology with alternatives that are long lasting, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly.

Beyond energy and climate goals, the upgraded lighting will also mean improved visibility to towns around the county, helping residents feel safe and secure, and boosting visibility for CCTV. Somerset County Council lead member for transport and digital, Councillor Mike Rigby, said: "Energy costs are a major concern for public organisations, businesses, and households across the county.

"Committing now to 100% LED street lighting helps us reap immediate rewards by cutting energy costs so we can continue to provide great value to the people of Somerset. And, at the same time, we take a big step forward in our longer-term ambition for a carbon-neutral Somerset by 2030.

"Additionally, the streets will now be lit better than before, ensuring citizens can feel more confident and secure during the evenings or nights.''
