Major progress on St Dunstan’s House renovation in Glastonbury
Work on the St Dunstan's House renovation is moving full steam ahead, with significant progress made throughout January as part of the Glastonbury Town Deal project.
One of the standout discoveries has been an original architectural feature hidden for decades. While removing two cast iron radiators in the Main Hall to make way for new doors leading to the glazed atrium, workers uncovered a 45-degree angled wall above the radiators, designed to help distribute heat more efficiently.
This feature had been covered with wooden panels over the years, but it will now be restored above every radiator to bring back the room's original character.
Elsewhere, the last section of the original roof on the rear lean-to has been stripped away, making way for new insulation and replacement materials, with work being carried out by Nub News sponsors Melhuish & Saunders Limited, as well as Dowlas Property Group, Morgan Civil and Structural and O2i Design Ltd.
Groundworks are well underway, with trenches being dug for the new mains electricity supply and pipes for the air source heat pump, both key steps towards modernising the building's energy infrastructure.

Next, work will begin on digging between the Town Hall and St Dunstan's House for the new drainage system and atrium foundations, setting the stage for a major construction phase. In addition, a new set of steps will be built at the front of St Dunstan's House, providing easier access from Magdalene Street and improving visibility for the public.
With each stage of the project bringing the vision for St Dunstan's House closer to reality, these updates mark a major step forward in the transformation of this historic site.
