Renovation work on Glastonbury's St Dunstan's House is moving forward rapidly, with contractors uncovering hidden historic features and making significant progress on transforming the building into a Community Health and Wellbeing Centre, set to open next year.
The Town Clerk visited the site this week to see the latest developments, which include the creation of a new front entrance in its original door position. Inside, several long-lost features have been discovered, including fireplaces, views through to the old hallway and garden, and the main staircase—reminders of the building's rich heritage.
"It's fantastic to see these features re-emerge as we breathe new life into St Dunstan's House," said a Town Council spokesperson. "We want this centre to be a vibrant hub for the community while respecting the history that makes this building so special."
Structural work has not been without its challenges. While contractors have uncovered some stunning details, they've also faced more problematic finds, such as severely warped joists. Despite this, efforts to repair the roof structure continue, and the area for a new lift shaft has now been cleared, ensuring future accessibility.
Residents are being encouraged to have their say on what services and facilities they want to see at the centre once it opens. Feedback can be submitted through an online survey here.
The project is being undertaken by a range of local firms, including Nub News sponsors Melhuish & Saunders Limited, Dowlas Property Group, Morgan Structural Limited, and O2i Design Ltd, and is part of a wider effort to create a space that supports the health and wellbeing of the Glastonbury community.
