No development sites have been allocated in Somerset's emerging Local Plan, the council has stressed as it sets out the next steps towards deciding where future growth should go.

The next consultation is planned for 2027, with adoption of the final plan scheduled for 2029.

The plan will guide development across Somerset's towns, villages and countryside over the next 20 years. For Wells, Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury and Street, decisions about the broad pattern of growth will come before individual sites are assessed for allocation.

Responses to the first consultation are now being analysed. That exercise asked people about the issues the plan should address and how Somerset could change, rather than seeking views on specific development sites.

Cllr Mike Rigby, Somerset Council's lead member for planning, economic development and assets, said: "I would like to thank everyone who spent time responding to the scoping consultation and sharing their thoughts at this early stage.

"This will help to ensure we build a Local Plan covering the right issues, around a Vision that people can get behind and focus new development in the right places.

"It's important to stress that this consultation was not about specific development sites or potential allocations, and no sites have been allocated at this stage.

"The development of the Local Plan is an extensive process, with multiple stages and lots more consultation to follow before any final plans are adopted."

The council is still developing its spatial strategy — the broad approach to where growth should be directed across Somerset. That will help determine whether individual sites fit the plan, alongside checks on their suitability, availability and whether development can realistically be delivered.

Any sites eventually proposed for allocation will require further evidence and assessment. Residents will also have opportunities to comment before decisions are taken.

The next consultation, currently planned for 2027, will cover the emerging plan's content, proposed spatial strategy and supporting evidence. Further public consultations are expected in 2028, before the final plan is submitted later that year.

Formal adoption is scheduled for 2029. The council's Local Plan webpage provides further information and links to the timetable.
