Seventeen local jobs offering a possible escape from your current one
By Laura Linham 2nd Oct 2026
If your working week has once again become an elaborate countdown to 5pm, it may be worth seeing what else is available.
This week's vacancies include a legal role paying up to £70,000, flexible work for anyone who only wants a few extra hours and several positions for people who understand machinery without first giving it a hopeful kick.
An established law firm in Street is prepared to pay between £45,000 and £70,000 for a Private Client Lawyer. The full-time role covers wills, estate planning and a varied private client caseload, so it will require someone able to handle complicated family matters without suggesting everyone settles them through a strongly worded WhatsApp poll. The firm is promoting its smaller, supportive team, flexible working and opportunities for progression.
If that sounds like rather more responsibility than you had in mind, merchandising work is available in Glastonbury for around two to four hours a week. The Merchandiser role pays £15.07 an hour including holiday pay, with the possibility of more hours during busy periods. Work is flexible across the week, although some visits are fixed for Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. It could bring in a little extra money without forcing you to introduce yourself at parties by your job title.
In Street, an opticians is offering up to £65,000 plus a bonus of as much as £5,000 for an Optometrist. Full-time and part-time arrangements are available, alongside private medical cover, 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays and opportunities for further clinical training. Testing appointments last 25 minutes, with pre-screening completed in advance, leaving plenty of time for patients to decide that lenses one and two look exactly the same.
Early birds can make themselves useful as a self-employed Morning Delivery Driver around Street. The work involves delivering newspapers and magazines to homes and businesses while the rest of Somerset is still negotiating with the alarm clock. The hours may start early, but so will the finish — and nobody is likely to invite you to a quick Teams call at 5am.
Over at Clarks, an eCommerce Visual Merchandiser is needed to decide how products and content should appear across the company's UK and Republic of Ireland websites. The Street-based job covers the digital trading plan, online product categories, customer journeys and website performance. Applicants will need ecommerce experience and strong analytical skills, because apparently moving something two pixels to the left now requires both professional judgement and several spreadsheets.
Also in Street, a qualified Dispensing Optician Manager is wanted to lead an opticians department. As well as looking after patients, the successful applicant will manage optometrists and optical assistants, oversee compliance and keep the department on target — rather more involved than standing beside the glasses and occasionally saying, "Yes, those suit you." Benefits include a pension, colleague discount, professional indemnity insurance and payment of General Optical Council fees.
If motorways hold more appeal than management meetings, ongoing work is available for a Class 2 Driver delivering ready-mix concrete. The job comes with weekly pay and full mixer training, with the possibility of becoming permanent. Previous Class 2 driving experience is needed, but knowledge of concrete can be acquired on the job — finally making good use of all those hours spent waiting for roadworks to finish.
In Wells, a SEND and SEMH Tutor is needed to provide personalised one-to-one education for children and young people. Lessons will need to be adapted around each learner's academic, emotional and behavioural needs, particularly where pupils struggle with regulation, engagement or traditional classrooms. It is a role requiring patience, flexibility and the ability to abandon a carefully prepared plan without dramatically staring out of the window. Experience supporting young people with SEND or SEMH needs is required.
Wells Cathedral is offering 28 hours a week to someone who knows their way around the accounts and regards an unexplained discrepancy of 3p as a personal challenge. The permanent Finance Assistant position pays between £21,200 and £22,800, equivalent to a full-time salary of £26,500 to £28,500. Responsibilities include processing transactions, reconciling accounts and providing accurate financial information to other departments. Careful stewardship of the figures is required; putting the matter in higher hands is unlikely to satisfy the auditors.
At South Horrington Village, a retirement complex is recruiting a Kitchen Assistant. The permanent role pays £13.46 an hour for 32 hours a week, spread across four shifts. Staff work either 6.30am to 3pm or 10.30am to 7pm, including alternate weekends. Food preparation, washing dishes and helping to provide meals around residents' dietary needs are all involved. Good people skills will be important too, as catering rarely consists entirely of peaceful chopping while something bubbles agreeably in the background.
Anyone able to hear a mysterious mechanical noise and identify something more specific than "that doesn't sound good" could earn £55,000 as a Multi-Skilled Engineer. The job is with a Somerset food and drink manufacturer and has potential earnings above £60,000. It follows a four-on, four-off pattern covering two days and two nights. Engineering experience is essential, and at that salary, "have you tried switching it off and on again?" should probably be saved until at least the third attempt.
A Retail Security Officer is also wanted in Shepton Mallet, with various shifts available at £16.20 an hour. Applicants need a door supervision or security guarding SIA licence, along with the confidence to deal professionally with staff, customers and anyone determined to turn a minor shopping trip into an incident report.
For somebody who enjoys solving problems but would prefer them to involve equipment rather than customers, there is an Engineering Project Manager vacancy nearby. The successful candidate will turn operational challenges into practical improvements and oversee projects through to completion. It is one for the sort of person who sees a complicated issue and starts forming a plan, rather than quietly closing the door and hoping another department discovers it first.
A permanent Workshop HGV Engineer could earn up to £46,500 plus overtime while working daytime shifts. The workshop handles a mixed fleet including HGVs, refuse lorries, road sweepers, vans, trailers and tippers. Work ranges from servicing and MOT preparation to electrical faults, fabrication and repairs, so there should be rather more variety than changing the same office printer cartridge every Thursday. Relevant qualifications are required, with further training available on new vehicles and equipment.
Save the Children, meanwhile, needs a Shop Volunteer in Castle Cary. Volunteers can help with sorting donations, pricing stock, serving customers, organising the shop floor and creating window displays. No retail experience is needed, hours are flexible and even a couple each week can help the charity raise money for its work with children. It offers all the satisfaction of finding an unexpected treasure in a bag of donations, although somebody else will probably have priced it before you can take it home.
A secondary school in Castle Cary is also building a pool of day-to-day supply Teaching Assistants. Staff can choose how many days they work each week, with shifts running from 8.30am to 3.30pm during term time. Pay ranges from £92.56 to £95 a day. The work covers Years 7 to 11 and includes helping individual pupils, small groups and children with additional needs. Previous experience with young people is preferred, alongside the valuable ability to enter an unfamiliar classroom and appear entirely unsurprised by whatever is already happening.
Finally, anyone tired of sitting behind a desk could instead be paid to clean one. A Shepton Mallet manufacturer is offering between £12.71 and £13 an hour for a Temporary-to-Permanent Cleaner. The hours fall on Monday to Thursday afternoons, covering offices, kitchens, toilets and shared facilities. The initial placement will last at least 12 weeks, with the possibility of a permanent job for someone reliable, organised and prepared to confront the enduring workplace mystery of how an empty bin becomes full again within 20 minutes.
