The next stage in the slow regeneration of Merriman Park in Street looks set to get underway, pending approval from Somerset Council.

The park, first opened in 1923, had once been considered a community gem but saw years of disrepair after being taken over by the now-defunct Mendip District Council.

In a bid to restore the park to its former glory, the Street Parish Council acquired the park in 2014 and initiated a process of gradual rejuvenation. New play equipment was unveiled in 2020 as a part of these efforts.

Plans for the rejuvenated Merriman Park

Somerset Council has now validated a planning application for constructing new gates and a boundary wall at the park's entrance.

The entrance currently features a low wooden fence, approximately 2ft 2inches high and 30ft long, on both sides. The proposed renovations plan to replace this structure with a locally sourced, Blue Lias stone wall.

The planning application submitted by the Street Parish Council has garnered public attention due to the park's historical and communal significance. If approved, these changes are expected to enhance the park's aesthetic appeal while preserving its historical identity.

The decision on the proposed renovations is expected to be announced by Somerset Council by 2nd August, and the council's decision will determine the next step in the transformation of Merriman Park.

You can find the application here.
