The planned merger of Strode College with Bridgwater & Taunton College (BTC) will not impact the running of Street's Strode Theatre, according to college officials.

The college has confirmed that Strode Theatre will continue to operate as usual should the merger go ahead.

"The merger between Strode College and Bridgwater & Taunton College (BTC) is an exciting step forward, designed to bring new opportunities to both colleges, but we'd like to reassure people that it will be business as usual for Strode Theatre," said Tanya Schottlander, Director of Student Experience, Marketing and Communication

"Strode Theatre remains a vital part of our community, and our commitment to its programming and operations is unwavering. We look forward to welcoming audiences, as always. We remain committed to supporting local arts and welcoming audiences."

The planned merger between Strode College in Street and Bridgwater & Taunton College (BTC) comes amid financial challenges for Strode College, primarily due to significant liabilities from past subcontracting issues. This collaboration is expected to provide greater financial security, improve resource-sharing, and expand educational opportunities across Somerset, aligning with the national trend for smaller colleges to merge for sustainability.

A recent government audit revealed issues in Strode's subcontracting for certain traineeship programmes, leading to a financial clawback that has impacted the college's long-term sustainability. Despite cash reserves, the college's small size has made it difficult to absorb these costs, and the FE Commissioner advised exploring options like mergers to secure a sustainable future.

Strode College's principal, Dr. John Revill, noted that while the college remains solvent, this merger represents a strategic response to ensure it can continue serving students effectively in the long term.
