Proposal seeks 78 homes and shop in Walton
By Laura Linham 30th Jan 2026
A major planning application has been submitted for land south of Main Street in Walton that could deliver up to 78 homes and new commercial premises if approved.
The outline application, prepared by planning consultants for Walton Main Street LVA LLP, seeks permission for up to 78 dwellings and a commercial unit of up to 155 sqm, with detailed layout reserved for later application.
The site, currently grassland off Main Street to the south of The Royal Oak pub and bounded by East Mead Lane, would be accessed via a new signalised junction on Main Street.
Proposed pedestrian and cycle routes would link the development to existing pavements, and part of the site would be retained as landscape buffer and open space due to surface water sensitivity.
Applicants say a range of house types and tenures are envisaged, including affordable housing, and that the commercial unit might serve as a convenience store or local service.
Documents supporting the application include assessments of ecology, landscape, transport and flood risk, along with biodiversity net gain proposals and nutrient neutrality mitigation strategies.
Planners say the development would be closely related to Walton's built form and local amenities, with Street town centre about half a mile away along well‑lit pavements. They argue the scheme could help address housing need and contribute to sustainable growth in the area, even though the site lies immediately outside but adjacent to the current settlement boundary.
The application also references appeal decisions on other sites nearby where housing was allowed, citing accessibility to services and facilities.
The planning application has been submitted to Somerset Council, where it will be subject to consultation, statutory review and decision in due course. Members of the public can view and comment on the proposals via the council's planning portal.
