Glastonbury may soon welcome a new pharmacy, filling the void left by the closure of two pharmacies last year.

Currently, residents have access to just one pharmacy, located on Feversham Lane.

The prospect of introducing a new pharmacy took a step forward after the South West Pharmacy Committee approved an application.

NHS Somerset hailed this as a "key milestone" but noted that there are "several steps to be undertaken" before the pharmacy can commence operations.

The closures of Tesco and Boots pharmacies within three months of each other last year had significantly reduced the town's pharmaceutical services.

Following these closures, NHS Somerset has been "working closely" with Well Pharmacy, the town's remaining provider, which has seen an increased workload.

In a report to NHS Somerset, the South West Pharmaceutical Services Regulatory Committee stated it had approved a new community pharmacy application for Glastonbury, convinced that it would "confer a significant benefit to the local population by way of access to, or choice of, pharmaceutical services."

However, the decision has been met with an appeal, now in the hands of NHS Resolution for management. The details regarding which company will run the new pharmacy and its exact location remain undisclosed, although unconfirmed rumours suggest the new pharmacy could be the premises formerly occupied by Four Seasons, which is currently overgoing a refit following the closure of the shop.
