New hedgerows and wildflowers planted to boost wildlife along A39 in Street

A shopping centre in Street has planted hundreds of native plants, shrubs and wildflowers as part of a new eco project aimed at supporting local wildlife and cleaning up roadside air.
The planting scheme at Clarks Village, launched to mark World Environment Day, includes more than 600 native species set along the A39 near the Westway entrance. Hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel, guelder rose and field maple have been added to form a thick, diverse hedge designed to offer food and shelter for birds, bees and other pollinators.
Elsewhere, a damaged and struggling hedgerow near one of the main car parks has been replaced with Cotoneaster Franchetii – a hardy shrub chosen for its environmental impact. Research suggests the plant is up to 20% more effective at absorbing pollution than other varieties, making it well-suited for roadside planting.
An unused grassy patch beside the children's play area has also been transformed into a wildflower meadow, with 32 UK-native flower species and two grasses laid as part of the pollinator-friendly turf. A large bug hotel, spring bulbs and another native hedge are also planned.
Although the planting has taken place on private land, much of it borders public routes and green spaces in Street, offering a visible boost to biodiversity and environmental quality in the area.
