Man on pilgrimage to Glastonbury stole three cars during Christmas crime spree

A man on a pilgrimage to Glastonbury stole three cars and burgled a house during a Christmas crime spree, a court has heard.
Mark Davies, 41, said he was on a spiritual journey from Somerset back to his home in Gwent when he took a Ford Mondeo from Glastonbury on 22 December 2024.
A few days later, Davies cut power cables to a house in Devauden, Monmouthshire, before breaking in and stealing a Land Rover, a Volkswagen Golf and a £300 chainsaw.
The Golf was driven but later abandoned at the property before the owners returned from their festive break.
Davies was eventually arrested at a Tesco store in Blandford Forum, Dorset, in early January, where officers found him with the stolen Land Rover. The Mondeo was later found abandoned nearby.
Prosecutors told Cardiff Crown Court that Davies described himself to police as a pagan who lived a nomadic lifestyle, camping in fields. He said he had been walking from Glastonbury to Chepstow for the winter solstice and saw the stolen Mondeo as his means of getting home.
The court also heard that Davies had breached a restraining order by indirectly contacting his mother and had stolen packages from a property in Portskewett.
Davies, who is of no fixed address but originally from Chepstow, pleaded guilty to all charges. He has previous convictions for burglary, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, arson and battery.
Recorder Andrew Hammond jailed Davies for two years and six months, telling him he had shown "complete disregard for the property of others."
Davies will serve 40 per cent of his sentence in custody before being released on licence. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge.
