The A361, a crucial thoroughfare connecting Glastonbury and Street with Taunton has been closed for maintenance.

The road's closure due to flooding has inadvertently expedited essential maintenance works in the area.

The works involve cutting back numerous damaged and overgrown willow trees near West Lyng and the road will be closed between 9am and 3.30pm until Wednesday, January 24. It will, however, be open during peak hours and weekends to minimise disruption.

For those affected by the closure, a diversion route is available.

Detailed information on this and other travel disruptions can be found at www.somerset.gov.uk/roads-travel-and-parking/roadworks-and-travel/.

Cllr Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council's lead member for transport and digital, said: "This is the optimal time of year to manage vegetation, outside of the growing season.

"Fortunately, we've managed to reduce the closure time by taking the opportunity to get on site and start the work immediately.

"We understand, of course, there will be an impact for residents and road users. This should be minimised by the fact the road is open during peak hours and at weekends. This work has to be done for the safety of road users."
