A centuries-old tradition of community storytelling and artwork is being revived in Street and Glastonbury.

Village albums, collections of paintings, drawings, poems, and personal reflections, were first created in Glastonbury in 1811 and later in Street in 1857.

These albums provided a glimpse into everyday life, allowing residents to share their experiences for future generations. The last known collection was made in 1998, but now a new edition is being compiled for 2025.

The project is being led by Strode College, The King's Trust, and Street's planned Shoemaker's Museum, with contributions from the local community.

Liz Fox, marketing manager for the Shoemaker's Museum, said the albums were a way for people to record and share their daily lives. She added that the new version will feature "snapshots of life today" from members of the community.

An open day on 20 February saw residents of Street contribute poems, paintings, and photographs. Local schools, Strode College students, and retirement home residents have also submitted entries.

Fox described the contributions as "stunning," showcasing the creativity and interests of people in the area. She said reviving the tradition was an exciting opportunity to create something lasting for future generations.

The 2025 village album will include artwork, including drawings of modern footwear such as Crocs and Converse, reflecting both the area's shoemaking heritage and contemporary culture.
