After months of frustration and unsuccessful efforts, Glastonbury Town Council is urgently appealing for help in securing a contractor to maintain the public toilets in St John's car park.

Town Clerk Conor Ogilvie-Davidson told councillors at the most recent town council meeting that securing a contractor has been a significant challenge. Despite the council's best efforts, no contractor has yet committed to taking on the responsibility.

"We've been in talks with other contractors to come and take over cleaning the Glastonbury toilets," said Mr Ogilvie-Davidson. "I've even signed an agreement with one company, but they've since gone silent on us."

The deteriorating condition of the public toilets, particularly at St John's, has been a long-standing issue for the council. With blocked drains and years of neglect, the facilities are in dire need of attention. "We had to arrange drainage work at Saint John's because all the drains were blocked," explained Mr Ogilvie-Davidson. "But it's not our building, we don't have the lease, and the toilets are in a bad state."

The council is currently in discussions with Somerset Council about taking on the lease for the toilets and eventually acquiring the freehold. However, significant repairs would be required to keep the facilities standard. "If we're looking to sign a lease and possibly take on the freehold, quite a lot of work needs to be done to get the toilets to a suitable standard," said the Town Clerk.

Despite the setbacks, the council remains hopeful. A company based in Yeovil has expressed interest in taking over the cleaning contract and currently manages similar facilities in Ilminster and Castle Cary. But Mr Ogilvie-Davidson stressed that the search will continue if this does not work out.

He added: "I'll be honest – if there is a competent person or company, anywhere, interested in taking on the contract to clean the toilets at St John's, please get in touch."
