Police are stepping up patrols around Glastonbury schools following reports of poor and illegal parking during the school run.

Avon and Somerset Police formally made the issue a neighbourhood policing priority on Thursday, 10 September, with officers focusing on roads around schools at drop-off and pick-up times.

The Glastonbury neighbourhood policing team said it had received recent reports about the way vehicles were being parked around school areas.

Officers are now working alongside Somerset Council parking wardens to tackle problems where they are found.

Police are asking motorists not to cause obstructions or leave vehicles parked across pavements while dropping off or collecting children.

The force said: "The Neighbourhood Policing Team are prioritising patrols in and around schools in the Glastonbury area.

"This is due to recent reports of poor/illegal parking on the roads around the school areas primarily at drop off/pick up times and we are working alongside the Somerset County Council parking wardens to address any issues found."

Parking close to schools can become particularly congested during the short periods immediately before and after the school day, when large numbers of cars arrive at the same time.

The latest police priority does not single out individual Glastonbury schools or roads, but covers school areas across the town.

Residents who find a road obstructed are being asked to report it to police on 101 while the obstruction is taking place.

Officers will continue carrying out patrols around Glastonbury schools as part of the neighbourhood priority.
