Glastonbury chippy named among UK's top 40 takeaways

A Glastonbury chippy is flying the flag for Somerset after being named among the UK's top 40 fish and chip takeaways.

Knight's Fish Restaurant has made the longlist for Takeaway of the Year at the 2027 National Fish & Chip Awards – and is the only Somerset business among the 40 contenders.

The Northload Street restaurant will now face another round of judging as the list is whittled down to 20 semi-finalists and then a final top 10.

Businesses from across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have made the cut, with Knight's competing against shops from locations including Bristol, London, Oxford, Blackpool, Norwich and Inverness.

Judges selected the top 40 after assessing areas including food quality, customer service, industry knowledge and environmental and operational sustainability.

The next stage will involve a more detailed assessment covering product quality, hygiene, sustainability, customer service and knowledge of the fish and chip industry.

Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, which runs the awards, said: "As we celebrate the 39th year of the National Fish & Chip Awards, it's brilliant to see talent, passion, excellent professionalism and dedication to their craft on display.

"Every year, the Takeaway of the Year standard continues to rise and this new list of top 40 contenders exemplify that."

He said the awards were also intended to recognise the people working behind the counter as well as the businesses themselves.

Mr Crook added: "It's the people behind these businesses that make our industry what it is.

"We are proud to celebrate the owners, teams and young talent whose passion and hard work keep this much-loved tradition thriving."

The current Takeaway of the Year title is held by The Scrap Box in York.

Only 20 of the 40 businesses will progress to the semi-finals, before the top 10 are announced later in the competition.

The overall Takeaway of the Year winner will be revealed at the National Fish & Chip Awards ceremony at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in London on Wednesday, 24 February 2027.
