Glastonbury school in lockdown after reports of man carrying weapon near town library

A Glastonbury infant school and nursery went into lockdown after reports of a man carrying a weapon near the town library.
Parents were urged to stay away from Playaways Nursery, St John's Infant School and Jumping John's Nursery just after 1pm today (25 April), as police responded to an incident unfolding in the town centre.
A message posted on social media by the school warned: "We are currently in lockdown due to an incident in the town. Please do not come to the school until you are given the go-ahead. This is for yours and your children's safety."
It's understood that officers from Avon and Somerset Police advised the school to keep children indoors while they dealt with an incident in the High Street area.
All children and staff were confirmed safe and the incident was not on school grounds.
Headteacher Kerry Devane later confirmed the lockdown was from 1.10pm until 2.25pm. "All staff and children remained in the classroom and the police were in attendance," she said. "The lockdown procedure continued until we were given the all clear from the emergency services."
Ms Devane praised both staff and pupils for their response: "I am proud of the staff and students who followed our lockdown procedures as instructed. While no environment is absolutely risk free, we take safety seriously at St John's C of E VC Infants School and practise our emergency procedures each term."
Avon and Somerset Police said: "At 12.53pm today (25 April) we received a call reporting a man near Glastonbury library carrying a weapon.
Officers were at the scene within minutes of the call and conducted a thorough search of the area but neither the man nor any weapon was located. As a precaution, officers, who remain in the area, contacted the nearby nursery to make them aware of the incident."
The force has advised the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity by calling 999.
