Glastonbury has been spotlighted in a Guardian readers' round-up of favourite towns of culture in the UK, with contributors citing its rich events calendar, independent shops and iconic landscape as reasons to nominate the Somerset town.

The list was published on 5 February 2026 as part of a wider cultural feature responding to the launch of the UK's first town of culture initiative by the culture secretary.

Readers highlighted Glastonbury's year-round events, from traditional celebrations like Beltane in May to seasonal dragon processions, plus pilgrimages, academic talks and spiritual gatherings drawing thousands to the town. They also praised the high street's independent businesses, including bookshops, crystal and artisan stores, and the spectacular views from Glastonbury Tor over the Somerset Levels — described as "one of the most stunning sights in the country".

The nominations were framed in response to a national search for the UK's first ever town of culture, a programme designed to mirror the existing city of culture scheme and encourage cultural investment outside major urban centres. Other towns featured in the Guardian roundup included Hastings, Kirkcudbright, North Shields, Ipswich, Scarborough, Devizes, Caernarfon and Faversham.

While the government's official list of contenders for town of culture has yet to be confirmed, local supporters in Glastonbury welcomed the national attention, saying it reflects the "vibrant and diverse" cultural life of the town. Future developments linked to the official town of culture shortlist and bids are expected later this year.
