Glastonbury garage site set for demolition as old buildings get the all‑clear to come down

Two tired old buildings at the former Glastonbury Motor Repairs site have been given the all‑clear for demolition, it has been confirmed.
The units, which sit on Dyehouse Lane, have been empty for some time and will be taken down to their concrete slab bases to make way for future redevelopment.
Documents lodged with Somerset Council reveal how the site will be stripped and cleared in a single phase.

Contractors will disconnect utilities, remove hazardous materials – including asbestos cement sheets, asbestos flash guards and old rainwater goods – and dismantle both buildings.
The asbestos will be taken out and disposed of by licenced specialists before the main demolition starts. The site will be secured with fencing and warning signs, with dust and noise kept to a minimum. Operatives will use water sprays, air quality monitoring and safe access and exclusion zones throughout the work.
Once the buildings are down, any voids or manholes will be backfilled, and the site left secure until further redevelopment.
Somerset Council confirmed that prior approval was not required for the works, clearing the way for the site to be brought down.
More planning applications are expected in due course as developers decide what will rise in place of the old garage buildings.
