Glastonbury Frost Fayre 2024: Christmas cheer fills the town as parking chaos sparks frustration

By Laura Linham 30th Nov 2024

Glastonbury was a hive of activity today as the Frost Fayre returned, bringing thousands of visitors to the town for a full day of festive fun, live music, and bustling Christmas markets.

The event was officially opened by the Mayor of Glastonbury, Councillor Lokabee Lokabandhu, who also presided over the Christmas tree lights switch-on in Market Square, one of the day's standout highlights.

The Frost Fayre attracted a host of notable attendees, including local MP Sarah Dyke and the chair of Street Parish Council, Bryan Knickerbocker. Both were seen mingling with visitors and enjoying the festive atmosphere.

Crowds packed the High Street and surrounding areas, with stalls selling handmade gifts, festive treats, and artisan goods. Five live music stages showcased a variety of performances, while family-friendly activities like Santa's grotto and fairground rides ensured there was something for everyone.

The medieval market in the abbey grounds provided a quieter, yet equally enchanting, experience. Visitors browsed historical-themed stalls and enjoyed carols against the illuminated backdrop of the abbey ruins.

However, the event was marred by parking issues, with complaints from residents about blocked driveways and cars parked on pavements, corners and verges. Despite organisers encouraging visitors to use designated car parks and the Park and Ride service, traffic around Street and Glastonbury remained heavily congested throughout the day, exacerbated by Black Friday shopping deals at Clarks Village.

Selfish parking had residents in Glastonbury gritting their teeth.

Organisers will likely reflect on the day's successes and challenges, but for the thousands who attended, it was a celebration of all things festive, firmly marking the start of the Christmas season in Glastonbury.
