Residents in Glastonbury and Street are being warned to review their home security after police said burglars are actively targeting properties believed to contain jewellery, gold and large amounts of cash.

Avon and Somerset Police say criminals are specifically seeking homes where high-value items may be stored and are urging people across the area to take steps to protect their property.

Officers advise that valuables such as gold jewellery and large quantities of cash should ideally be kept with a bank or a specialist secure storage provider rather than stored at home.

If high-value items must be kept at home, police recommend storing them in a suitable safe supplied and fitted by a company approved by the Master Locksmiths Association.

Residents are also being encouraged to check that their homes are properly secured by locking doors and windows and considering additional security measures such as alarms, CCTV systems and smart doorbells.

Police say keeping photographs and written descriptions of valuable or sentimental items can also help identify property if it is recovered following a theft.

Anyone who receives an unexpected caller and feels suspicious is urged to report concerns to police by calling 101.

Officers are also encouraging residents to consider joining a Neighbourhood Watch group and to be careful about what they share on social media, as posts may unintentionally indicate when a property is empty.

Valuables can also be registered through the Immobilise property database, which helps police return recovered items to their rightful owners.

Further crime prevention advice and information about local neighbourhood policing teams is available through the Avon and Somerset Police website.
