Could you be Glastonbury’s next firefighter? Open evening this Thursday at the town’s fire station

Glastonbury Fire Station is opening its doors this Thursday (6 June) for a special recruitment evening — and they’re calling on local residents to step up and join the crew.
The station, based on George Street, is looking for new on-call firefighters — ordinary people who live or work within five minutes of the station and can drop everything to respond to emergencies when the pager sounds.
From 6pm to 9pm, anyone curious about the role is invited to meet the team, explore the station and fire engines, and learn more about what it takes to be part of the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.
The crew responds to around 300 callouts each year — everything from fires and road crashes to rescues and flood response. On-call firefighters are fully trained and supported, and many juggle the role alongside jobs in local businesses, trades, or as the self-employed.
Watch Manager Adam Whitcombe said:
“This is a rewarding opportunity for men and women in Glastonbury to make a real difference. You don’t need any previous experience — just a good level of fitness, a positive attitude, and a desire to help your community. We’re particularly looking for people who can offer daytime cover.”
The service offers full training, first aid and manual handling qualifications, and even LGV licences in some cases. Applicants must be aged 18 or over.
To find out more or to apply, visit dsfire.gov.uk, or drop into the open evening on Thursday. You can also contact Watch Manager Adam Whitcombe at [email protected] or visit the station during drill nights on Mondays or Tuesdays between 7pm and 8.30pm.
