The Zig Zag Building, a long-standing hub for Glastonbury's creative community, is seeking to raise funds to connect to mains electricity.

This move is essential to ensure the venue meets safety regulations and can continue hosting community events.

The Zig Zag Building has served as a sanctuary for over ten years. However, the project has faced challenges recently due to an enforcement notice from Somerset Council.

The notice was appealed, and a Public Inquiry was held in April, with the results still awaited.

To date, the fundraising efforts for the Zig Zag Building have been robust. Through GoFundMe, community events, and private donations, the project has raised £2,088 online and a total of £10,000. These funds have primarily covered legal fees and specialist planning reports required for the inquiry.

The current focus of the fundraiser is to secure £8,000 to install mains electricity. The national grid company has quoted £7,349 for the installation, which includes digging the highway but excludes the land inside the Zig Zag premises. This connection is crucial for the fire department to approve the fire alarm system, a mandatory requirement for public safety during events.

Organisers have emphasised the importance of this step, noting that, despite having solar power, mains electricity is necessary to ensure reliable power supply, especially during the winter months. The installation needs to be commissioned within 85 days from 2nd June to meet the requirements.

Supporters and members of the community who wish to contribute to the fundraising efforts can visit the Zig Zag Building's GoFundMe page for more details and to make a donation.
