Somerset Council has issued enforcement notices against Glastonbury's iconic Zig Zag building, citing long-standing concerns over land usage and living conditions.

Located on Morland Road in Northover, the 1930s structure has been a focus of regulatory scrutiny, and it's now facing stringent action.

These enforcement notices, due to come into force on 20 November 2023, require immediate attention to apparent planning breaches linked to the building and its associated car park. Specific conditions outlined by the Council demand an end to unauthorised mixed land usage for storage and residential activities, along with the removal of caravans, steel containers and other miscellanea.

Aware of the potential upheaval for vulnerable individuals residing at the site, Somerset Council has provided social and housing advice to those affected.

Further, as part of the government's £26.3 million Glastonbury Town Deal, efforts are underway to improve conditions for non-traditional dwellings, which could create a new site.

Now a hub for exhibitions, performances, and community gatherings, the Bauhaus-style building is also an off-grid project focused on sustainable living.

While authorities are focused on apparent planning breaches, they are also attuned to the possible repercussions for vulnerable individuals residing at the site. Somerset Council has offered social and housing advice and support, in addition to referencing ongoing plans under the £26.3 million Glastonbury Town Deal to improve facilities for non-traditional dwellings.

While the owners and community members of the Zig Zag building didn't respond to emails, they have taken to social media, urging supporters to write letters outlining why the space is vital to the local community.

As the enforcement process unfolds, these letters will form part of the legal defence.
