Sir Vince Cable visited Street this weekend to support Sarah Dyke's campaign for the Glastonbury and Somerton constituency.

The former Liberal Democrat leader engaged with local volunteers and joined Sarah Dyke on the campaign trail, speaking with residents.

Sarah Dyke won the Somerton and Frome by-election in July 2023. Following a review by the Boundary Commission for England, the constituency was divided, leading to Sarah Dyke contesting the new Glastonbury and Somerton seat.

Sir Vince Cable, former Liberal Democrat leader, said: "I've come to Glastonbury and Somerton to support Sarah because of her dedication and hard work since her by-election win. Sarah has demonstrated a strong commitment to the community, and I believe she will continue to be an effective advocate for local issues."

  • As the United Kingdom prepares for a general election on July 4, 2024, voters in Glastonbury and Street will need to be aware of significant changes to constituency boundaries and new voter ID requirements.
  • Constituency Changes: The constituency boundaries have been redrawn, affecting voters in Glastonbury and Street. Previously part of the Wells constituency, these areas are now included in the Glastonbury & Somerton constituency. This change aligns them with a larger portion of the former Somerton & Frome constituency, adding new dynamics to local representation. In the Glastonbury and Somerton area, Reform UK has nominated Tom Carter, while Jon Cousins represent the Green Party. The Liberal Democrats have put forward Sarah Dyke. Labour's candidate is Hal Hooberman, and the Conservatives have chosen Faye Purbrick.
  • New Voter ID Requirements: A significant change for all voters in this election is the introduction of mandatory photo ID at polling stations, a measure introduced by the current government. To vote, individuals will need to present one of several forms of acceptable photo ID. This includes UK or Northern Ireland driving licences, UK or other specified passports, various national ID cards, Blue Badges, biometric residence permits, Defence Identity Cards, and more. Even expired IDs will be accepted, provided the photo is still a good likeness.
  • For those who do not possess any of the acceptable forms of ID, there is an option to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate via the UK Government website, which will require a national insurance number and a recent digital photo.
