One of the roads into Baltonsborough remains closed for essential repairs to the Mill Bridge (known locally as Nogger's Bridge)
A scheme to reinforce the bridge to bring it up to modern strength requirements began in April and was due to finish last week. However, once work began it became clear that the deck of the bridge needed to be redesigned to prevent premature cracking and ensure it will meet its 120 year design life.
Following extensive investigations and surveys, the scheme was redesigned and is now due to finish on Friday 27 July.
While the road remains closed, Somerset County Council's structures team will also be repairing Wallyer's Bridge, to the west of Nogger's Bridge, which was recently damaged in a collision.Councillor John Woodman, Somerset County Council's Cabinet Member for Highways, said: "Our main priority is to keep people safe and the right thing to do here was to cease work, make sure the design was right and ensure the repairs will last.
"This does mean the work taking longer than initially planned, but it should prevent further disruption in the long-term."I'm also pleased we can take advantage of the road closure to carry out some other work nearby."
